Best time to visit

On weekdays in the morning, right at opening time at 9 AM, when there are the fewest crowds and the animals are most active after the morning feeding. The rainy season from May to October brings fresher air, but bring an umbrella.

Budget tips

The ticket is among the most affordable in the city, and children under three enter for free. On weekends the price is the same, but the crowds are bigger, so a weekday is a smarter choice with the same budget.

About

Quick facts: On a 21-hectare area within Finca La Aurora, over 280 animal species are housed, making it the largest zoo in Guatemala. The zoo simultaneously serves as a tourist attraction and a nonprofit organization, with part of the revenue going to endangered species conservation programs.

Highlights: The biggest attraction is the impressive bird enclosure, a huge netted aviary over 20 meters high where dozens of tropical birds fly freely, so walking through it feels like passing through a real rainforest cloud. There are also famous residents, including an old Andean condor that has been nesting in the same spot for over three decades and regularly attracts visitors with its wingspan of nearly three meters.

Insider tips

  • Head first to the bird aviary, because the morning fog and dew make it the most photogenic and the birds are the loudest then.
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes, because the paths through the garden are long and sloping in places.
  • Come during the week before 10 AM to avoid school groups that fill the main paths.
  • After your visit, stop by the nearby zoo park, where there is also a small train that takes you through additional parts of the estate.
