Weekday mornings are the quietest, because on weekends school groups and families come. Fortunately, the air-conditioned halls make the visit pleasant at any time of year.

Budget tips

Admission for foreigners costs about 50 quetzals, and students and seniors pay less with a valid ID. Check whether it is included in the combined ticket for other cultural attractions on campus, which works out cheaper.

About

Quick facts: The collection numbers over 2,000 traditional costumes and fabrics from all 22 departments of Guatemala, the largest such collection in the region. The museum operates within the campus of Francisco Marroquín University, and its photo archive preserves more than 30,000 images of costumes from different eras.

Highlights: The most fascinating thing is that each costume has its own language: the shapes, colors, and motifs on the fabric tell where the woman comes from, whether she is married, and which celebrations she marks. In one room you can compare two dresses from neighboring villages and see that they differ in every detail, from the weaving technique to the symbols that repeat across generations.

Insider tips

  • Bring reading glasses, the labels next to the exhibits are rich with information about the origin and symbolism of each costume
  • The museum is closed on Sundays, so plan your visit from Tuesday to Saturday
  • Photography is allowed without flash, so bring a camera that performs well in low light
  • The best-selling souvenir in the museum shop is miniature dolls in authentic costumes, an ideal gift that supports local artisans
