About
Quick facts: Perched on a rocky cliff overlooking the Arabian Sea, this lighthouse has guided ships through the treacherous waters off Kerala's coast since the early 1900s. Its distinctive red and white bands make it instantly recognizable to sailors approaching the port of Kannur from miles away.
Highlights: Unlike most lighthouses you can only view from below, this one lets you climb all the way to the top for a 360-degree panorama where the Lakshadweep Sea meets coconut-fringed shores. On clear days, you can spot the distant outline of the Mappila Bay fishing fleet heading out for the morning catch, their wooden hulls bobbing against the horizon.
Insider tips
- Wear closed-toe shoes for climbing the narrow spiral staircase, as the metal steps can get slippery.
- Visit on a weekday morning to have the lighthouse almost entirely to yourself.
- Position yourself on the east-facing side of the top deck for the best photos of the red-and-white tower against the blue sky.
- Skip the small souvenir shop at the entrance and instead walk 5 minutes to the local market for better prices.
