Lombok is generally safe and welcoming for tourists, but petty scams and overcharging around transport and markets are common. Violent crime is limited, but traffic is chaotic and street crossing requires care. The main things to watch are taxi overcharging from the airport, unofficial guides and changers, and unlicensed drivers at tourist sites.

How it works: Unlicensed drivers approach tourists right outside the arrivals hall offering fixed trips at two to three times the official fare. They may claim no official taxis are available or quote per-passenger instead of per-trip.
How to avoid it: Walk past all touts and use the official taxi desk inside the terminal. Confirm the fare is for the whole car before accepting.
How it works: Unofficial money changers near markets and tourist areas offer rates that look attractive but include hidden margins or short-change you, especially with large notes. Some use calculators that display the wrong total.
How to avoid it: Use bank branches or authorized money changer offices. Count your rupiah in front of the counter before leaving.
How it works: People approach tourists at ferry terminals and beaches selling boat tickets, snorkeling trips or Gili island transfers at inflated prices, sometimes for boats that do not exist or are overbooked.
How to avoid it: Book through official ferry operators or your accommodation. Compare prices at the ticket booth before committing.
How it works: Some warungs and beachfront restaurants in tourist areas present menus without prices for seafood or local dishes, then charge an inflated amount at the end. Fresh seafood is often priced per kilogram without explaining the weight.
How to avoid it: Ask for written prices before ordering, especially for seafood. Confirm the per-kilogram rate and total weight before cooking.
How it works: Some rental shops claim pre-existing damage to a scooter is new when you return it, and demand large cash compensation. They may also keep your passport as security and refuse to return it until you pay.
How to avoid it: Photograph the scooter from all angles on pickup and insist on written rental terms. Avoid leaving your passport as a deposit; offer a cash deposit or a copy instead.
How it works: Street vendors and some shops sell fake cultured pearls and low-grade gems as high quality. Prices are often inflated several times over true value, and no authenticity certificate is provided.
How to avoid it: Buy from established, licensed jewelers and ask for a written receipt with a guarantee. Be skeptical of very low prices for large pearls.
Skip street sellers: book official tickets and tours with free cancellation.
Lombok International Airport (LOP)
Fair taxi price (official, daytime): 150,000 Rp - 250,000 Rp (€7.5 - €12). Use the official airport taxi desk inside the arrivals hall for a fixed fare to central Mataram or Senggigi. Refuse drivers who approach you outside the terminal with inflated prices. Gojek and Grab are cheaper options in the wider area.
Best alternative: Airport shuttle bus to Mandalika and central Mataram (50,000 Rp (€2.47), about 90 min)
Tipping: Tipping is not mandatory but appreciated. In restaurants, rounding up or leaving 5 to 10 percent is common for good service. Taxi and tour drivers do not expect tips but appreciate small amounts.
Cover and service charges: Many restaurants add a service charge of around 5 to 10 percent, shown on the bill. This is standard practice and included in the total, so no extra tip is needed. Check the bill for a service charge line before adding more.
Use ATMs attached to major banks (BCA, Mandiri, BNI) rather than standalone machines in tourist areas, which often charge higher fees. Always choose to be charged in Indonesian rupiah and decline dynamic currency conversion when paying by card. Carry cash because many small warungs, markets and bemos do not take cards.
