Money tips for Tokyo, Japan

  • Fair taxi price (official, daytime): ¥20,000 - ¥30,000 (€115 - €170). Use the official taxi rank at the terminal. Metered fare to central Tokyo is roughly 20,000 to 30,000 yen depending on time and traffic. Refuse drivers who solicit inside the arrivals hall or offer a flat high rate.
  • Best alternative: Narita Express (N'EX) train to Tokyo Station (¥3,000 (€16.91))
  • Tap your IC card (Suica, Pasmo, or contactless) at the ticket gate when entering and exiting. Paper tickets are inserted at the gate and returned. No separate validation machine is used; forgetting to tap or exiting without a valid ticket triggers the gate to close and blocks you. Fine without a valid ticket: ¥15,000 (€84.53).
  • Tipping is not customary in Japan. Staff may refuse or seem confused if you leave cash. It can occasionally be seen as rude. Rounding up is not expected in restaurants or taxis.
  • No cover or service charge is standard in most restaurants. Some izakayas add a small table charge (otoshi) which is listed on the menu or stated by staff. Menus generally display prices with tax. No hidden bread or service fees are common.
  • Always choose to be charged in yen and decline dynamic currency conversion when asked. Prefer ATMs at Japan Post Bank or 7-Eleven, which accept foreign cards reliably. Independent ATMs in convenience stores or tourist spots may charge higher withdrawal fees. Cards are widely accepted in Tokyo, but carry cash for small shops and street food.
