It is worth setting off early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when the sunlight bathes the old town rooftops and hillsides in a golden glow. In summer, the midday heat can be unbearable on the treeless, open terrain, so the early morning hours are the most ideal.

Quick facts: It was continuously used as a fortress for more than 1,100 years, which is considered a rarity in all of Europe. In the 14th century the Serbian Nemanjić dynasty, and later the Ottoman Empire, also expanded it, so today Serbian, Byzantine, and Turkish architectural elements are mixed within the walls.
Highlights: From the southeastern tower of the fortress, exactly 365 steps lead up to the top level, one for each day of the year. From the summit, the bends of the Bistrica River and the red tiled roofs of the old town offer a sight as if a medieval miniature were coming to life before you.
Insider tips
- Instead of the main gate, start up the small footpath on the eastern side, it is shorter and more shaded than the winding road.
- Watch the sunset from the western tower: the sun goes down behind the peaks of the Sharr Mountains, and the whole city is bathed in gold.
- Wear comfortable, closed shoes, because the cobblestone paths and steep stone stairs can be slippery, especially after rain.
- Avoid weekends and religious holidays, as there are lots of visitors at such times, and parking is chaotic at the foot of the fortress.
