Early morning, when the first rays of the sun filter through the tall windows and the mosque is still almost completely empty. In summer it is also an ideal refuge from the afternoon heat, and even then few people visit it.
Budget tips
Admission is free, but donations are gladly accepted for maintenance. Around the mosque, several cheap street vendors offer refreshments and local snacks, so it is worth buying from them instead of the expensive tourist shops.

Quick facts: Pristina's largest Ottoman-era building, the 17th-century mosque, was built from nothing other than the carved stones of the Roman-era city of Ulpiana. The mosque's stunning dome rises 35 meters high, and it can hold 600 worshippers at once.
Highlights: The dizzyingly tall minaret standing at the entrance dominates the skyline of this part of the city with its 42 meters. Standing under the dome inside, you are overcome by the special feeling that in the dimly lit interior, the frescoes and gilded calligraphies are so rich in detail that they cannot be taken in with a single glance.

- Take off your shoes before entering, and if you are a woman, bring a headscarf to cover your head, because there is not always a spare one at the entrance.
- A few minutes' walk from the mosque you will find the ruins of the old bazaar, which are free and make a great photo subject.
- In the nearby teahouse, order a glass of traditional Kosovar tea while looking at the silhouette of the mosque.
- Avoid the Friday midday prayer time (around 12-2 p.m.), as only Muslim worshippers may enter at that time.
