About
Quick facts: Housed in a striking 19th-century neo-Gothic palace, this museum safeguards over 180,000 artifacts of Lithuanian folk art. Its collection spans wooden and ceramic sculptures, textiles, and painted furniture that trace rural life from the 16th century to the early 1900s.
Highlights: Three massive, intricately carved wooden altarpieces from the 18th century dominate the main hall, each one weighing over two tons and painted in vivid cobalt blues and vermillion reds. Look closely at the smallest folk crosses on display: some measure just six inches tall but carry over 40 distinct miniature carvings.
Insider tips
- Skip the audio guide and ask at the front desk if a staff member can point out the 17th-century 'devil trap' cross in Room 4, they love telling that story.
- The textile gallery on the second floor has a low-light photography restriction, but the wooden sculpture hall allows flash-free photos.
- Wear comfortable shoes: the original hardwood floors creak beautifully but several staircases have uneven 18th-century steps.
- Arrive by 11 AM on Saturdays to catch the free 20-minute folk instrument demonstration in the basement workshop.
