About
Quick facts: Nearly 200,000 paintings, sculptures, and works on paper fill the collection here, spanning from the 16th century right up to contemporary Lithuanian art. The building itself was originally a courthouse before being transformed into a museum space in the 1930s.
Highlights: Tucked away on the top floor is a room dedicated entirely to Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, a Lithuanian painter and composer who created over 300 synesthetic artworks that literally visualize music. Stand close to his cycle "Sonata of the Stars" and you can trace the cosmic spirals and floating orbs that seem to pulse with their own quiet rhythm.
Insider tips
- Head straight to the fourth floor first, the Čiurlionis collection draws the biggest crowds later in the day.
- Photography without flash is allowed everywhere, so bring your camera for the ornate 18th-century sacral art hall.
- The museum cafe serves surprisingly good coffee and cake for under 3 euros, a quiet spot to rest between wings.
- Pick up the free English floor plan at the ticket desk: the gallery layout can be confusing without it.
