Best time to visit
Arrive before 10 a.m. on a Saturday when farmers bring their freshest produce and the energy is at its peak. Weekday mornings are quieter if you prefer to browse without crowds.
Budget tips
Entry is free. Bring small bills in cash, many stalls don't accept cards. Shop for produce and cheese in the main hall for the best prices, not the tourist-facing stalls near the entrances.

About
Quick facts: More than 300 vendors pack this lively market hall, dishing out fresh produce, homemade cheeses, and smoked meats from the surrounding countryside. Locals have been coming here since the early 1970s to stock up on everything from garden-grown vegetables to hand-rolled rye bread.
Highlights: Head downstairs to the meat and dairy section where a dozen vendors sell curd cheese called varškė, still warm and wrapped in cloth right from the farm. The salty, tangy smell of fermented cucumbers and sauerkraut barrels hits you before you even reach the basement steps.
Insider tips
- Bring your own reusable bag, vendors rarely provide plastic bags and you'll likely buy more than expected.
- Skip the upstairs cafes and grab a coffee from the kiosk near the main entrance for a fraction of the price.
- Look for the women selling wild mushrooms and berries in season, they source directly from forests in eastern Lithuania.
- Visit the fish counter in the basement around 11 a.m. when the day's catch is freshly displayed.
