Money tips for Lima, Peru

  • Fair taxi price (official, daytime): 60 S/ - 80 S/ (€15 - €21). Use the official taxi rank inside the arrivals hall or a ride-hailing app like Uber, Cabify or Beat. Refuse offers from unlicensed drivers who approach you in the terminal or outside the exits.
  • Best alternative: Official airport shuttle buses or the Metropolitano system after a short connection; check the airport's own transport desk for current routes. (8 S/ (€2.06))
  • On the Metropolitano you must tap a prepaid card at the turnstile before boarding. There is no on-bus validation. Entering without a valid tap is treated as fare evasion. Fine without a valid ticket: 200 S/ (€51.39).
  • Around 10 percent is appreciated in nicer restaurants. Rounding up is fine for taxis. Tips are welcomed for guides and porters.
  • Some restaurants add a service charge of around 10 percent to the bill; it is optional by law but often included without asking. Confirm whether it is included before paying. Menu prices usually exclude it.
  • Always choose to be charged in soles and decline dynamic currency conversion. Prefer ATMs attached to major bank branches. Watch for independent ATM kiosks in tourist areas that charge high fees and offer poor rates.
