Money tips for Bratislava, Slovakia

  • Fair taxi price (official, daytime): €25 - €35. Use the official taxi rank in front of the terminal or a booking app such as Bolt or Uber. Confirm the price before getting in and refuse unlicensed drivers who approach you inside the arrivals hall.
  • Best alternative: Bus 61 to the main train station (Hlavná stanica), then tram into the centre (€1.10)
  • Validate your ticket in the yellow validator on board immediately after boarding. Mobile tickets in the official IDS BK app are activated at purchase and shown to inspectors on request. Failure to validate counts as travelling without a ticket. Fine without a valid ticket: €50.
  • Round up or leave about 10% in restaurants if service was good. Not mandatory. Taxi drivers are generally not tipped beyond rounding up the fare.
  • Service is normally included in the bill but a small tip is still customary. Check the bill for any added cover or service charge, and ask to see the menu with prices before ordering if none is displayed.
  • Always choose to be charged in euros and decline dynamic currency conversion when prompted at an ATM or card terminal. Prefer ATMs attached to major bank branches. Independent street ATMs, especially near the old town, often charge high fees, so check the fee screen before withdrawing.

How we calculate

Stay is a double room shared by two (one room per two travelers). Food assumes two cheap meals, a modest dinner and a coffee on a budget, a cheap lunch, a restaurant dinner, coffee and a drink mid-range and restaurant meals, coffees and drinks in comfort. Transport is a daily public transport allowance, plus taxis in the higher tiers. Sights is an average daily allowance for entry tickets and activities. Everything is per day of the trip; a 3-night trip counts 3 days.

Not included: flights, travel insurance, city tax (usually a few euros per person per night, paid at the hotel), shopping and nightlife.
