Money tips for Spain

  • Fair taxi price (official, daytime): €30 - €40. Use only the official metered taxi rank outside each terminal. Agree on nothing with drivers who approach you inside. The metered fare to central Madrid is roughly 30 to 40 euros. Drivers must use the meter.
  • Best alternative: Metro Line 8 (pink line) to Nuevos Ministerios, or the official Airport Express bus 203 to Cibeles (€5)
  • Validate your ticket at the gate before boarding the metro, tram, or Cercanías train. On buses, validate when you board. Buy and validate before travelling; a validated ticket is only valid once. Fine without a valid ticket: €100.
  • Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory. Round up the bill or leave 5 to 10% in restaurants. Taxi drivers and tour guides do not expect a tip.
  • Some restaurants add a cover or bread charge, so check the menu and bill. Prices shown are in Spain, so a table outside or a terrace may cost more than the printed menu. Confirm the bill matches what you ordered.
  • Always choose to be charged in euros and decline dynamic currency conversion. Prefer bank-attached ATMs over independent machines with high fees. Check the fee warning on screen before confirming a withdrawal.

How we calculate

Stay is a double room shared by two (one room per two travelers). Food assumes two cheap meals, a modest dinner and a coffee on a budget, a cheap lunch, a restaurant dinner, coffee and a drink mid-range and restaurant meals, coffees and drinks in comfort. Transport is a daily public transport allowance, plus taxis in the higher tiers. Sights is an average daily allowance for entry tickets and activities. Everything is per day of the trip; a 3-night trip counts 3 days.

Not included: flights, travel insurance, city tax (usually a few euros per person per night, paid at the hotel), shopping and nightlife.

Estimates from average local prices and live hotel rates; exchange rates as of 2026-10-06. Your trip can cost more or less.
