Money tips for Stockholm, Sweden

  • Fair taxi price (official, daytime): 500 kr - 700 kr (€44 - €62). Use the official taxi rank outside the terminal and agree on a price or confirm the meter before starting. Uber, Bolt, TaxiKurir and Taxi Stockholm are the main apps with pre-agreed fares. Avoid drivers who approach you inside arrivals.
  • Best alternative: Arlanda Express train to Stockholm Central Station (330 kr (€29.21))
  • Buy and validate your ticket before boarding. If using the SL app, the ticket activates when you start a journey. Paper and mobile tickets must be shown to inspectors on request; there are no physical gates on most of the network. Fine without a valid ticket: 1,500 kr (€132.78).
  • Tipping is not required in Stockholm. Rounding up the bill or leaving about 10 percent in restaurants for good service is appreciated but optional. Taxi drivers and tour guides do not expect tips.
  • Service charges are included in menu prices in Sweden by law. There is no cover charge or bread fee at standard Stockholm restaurants. Any extra charge shown on the bill must have been disclosed on the menu. Be wary only of tourist-area spots without displayed prices.
  • Always choose to be charged in Swedish kronor (SEK) and decline dynamic currency conversion at ATMs and card terminals. Prefer ATMs attached to major banks. Independent ATMs in tourist areas often carry high withdrawal fees.
