Best time to visit

Weekday mornings right after the lanes open are the sweet spot, the alley sits nearly empty and raking low light warms the red brick facades. Summers bring heat and tour groups, so an early visit spares you the worst of both.

Budget tips

Entry is free every day, and the rotating exhibitions inside the restored buildings carry no ticket either. Save your cash for the small cafe at the lane's entrance and the street food a five minute stroll away.

About

Quick facts: Roughly 300 years of history squeeze into one short lane where thin, pale Qing dynasty bricks sit flush against darker ones added during the Japanese era. The entire block came within a hair of demolition in the 1990s for a planned school expansion, but years of protests turned it into a free open air gallery instead.

Highlights: Run your hand along the arcade walls and you'll find a masonry time capsule, thin pale bricks pressed from the Qing era beside thicker dark ones laid under Japanese rule. Near the lane's far end a centuries old stone well still waits in the courtyard, and on quiet mornings the only sound is rain ticking off the tiled eaves.
