Roughly 100 of the original trading shophouses still stand, and during the Lunar New Year window, one street swells with over 800 stalls that ring up hundreds of millions in sales.
Highlights: Every January, the main street becomes a mile-long open-air market where 800-plus stalls sell dried scallops, candied fruit, and incense, and the smell reaches you from blocks away. Xiahai City God Temple's matchmaker deity has been pairing hopeful singles for over a century, and devotees toss red 'peach blossom' talismans into the air for a blessing before asking him to intervene.
