Quick facts: More than 200 military families once crammed onto one hillside, stacking homes so tightly that neighbors crossed rooftops to reach their front doors. A demolition order nearly flattened the tangled warren, but preservationists rallied, and by 2010 the alleys had become home to rotating artist residencies.
Highlights: Homes here are a hand-built patchwork of salvaged brick, concrete, and rusted tin, every extension added as families grew, so no two facades match. The 1960s air-raid shelter still snakes beneath the lanes, cool and dim, with tunnels that once let families dash straight down to the riverbank.
Insider tips
- Wear grippy shoes, because the lanes are steep, uneven, and slick after rain.
- Hit the upper terraces by 10 a.m. to photograph the rooftops before tour groups arrive.
- Skip the tight interior alleyways if you are claustrophobic, and linger in the open courtyards instead.
- Bring bug spray in summer, since the dense greenery keeps the walkways lush but mosquito-prone.
