Money tips for Bangkok, Thailand

  • Fair taxi price (official, daytime): ฿300 - ฿400 (€8 - €11). Take the official taxi rank on level 1; the meter plus ~50 THB airport surcharge and tolls is fair. Refuse drivers who quote a flat price without a meter.
  • Best alternative: Airport Rail Link train to Phaya Thai station, then connecting by BTS or MRT. (฿45 (€1.19))
  • BTS and MRT use entry gates with single-journey tokens or cards; no separate stamping. Buses need the fare paid to the conductor on board. Always keep your token or card to exit. Fine without a valid ticket: ฿1,000 (€26.48).
  • Tipping is common but not mandatory; rounding up is appreciated. Taxi drivers and most cafés do not expect it.
  • Some restaurants add a 10% service charge and 7% VAT shown on the bill; cover or bread charges are not standard. Ask if unsettled.
  • Always choose to be charged in Thai baht and decline dynamic currency conversion. Prefer bank-attached ATMs; a flat withdrawal fee is standard across most bank ATMs.
