Money tips for Thailand

  • Fair taxi price (official, daytime): ฿200 - ฿400 (€5.5 - €11). Use the official metered taxi rank on level 1 and insist the meter runs. The fare to central Bangkok is about 200 to 400 baht plus tolls and a small airport surcharge. Refuse drivers who quote a flat inflated price without the meter.
  • Best alternative: Airport Rail Link to Phaya Thai, then BTS Skytrain (฿45 (€1.19))
  • Buy a token or tap a stored-value card at the gate to enter BTS and MRT stations. There is no separate validation step; the turnstile confirms your ride. Keep the token until you exit, as it is needed to pass the exit gate. Fine without a valid ticket: ฿1,000 (€26.48).
  • Tipping is not expected. Small tips are appreciated for good restaurant service and staff, and rounding up taxi fares is common but optional.
  • Most restaurants add a 10 percent service charge and 7 percent VAT shown in the bill, so check before adding a tip. Some tourist-area venues add hidden charges or show menus without prices; confirm prices before ordering.
  • Always choose to be charged in baht and decline dynamic currency conversion. Use ATMs attached to major bank branches where possible. Many standalone and independent ATMs charge a per-withdrawal fee of up to 220 baht, so withdraw larger amounts less often.

How we calculate

Stay is a double room shared by two (one room per two travelers). Food assumes two cheap meals, a modest dinner and a coffee on a budget, a cheap lunch, a restaurant dinner, coffee and a drink mid-range and restaurant meals, coffees and drinks in comfort. Transport is a daily public transport allowance, plus taxis in the higher tiers. Sights is an average daily allowance for entry tickets and activities. Everything is per day of the trip; a 3-night trip counts 3 days.

Not included: flights, travel insurance, city tax (usually a few euros per person per night, paid at the hotel), shopping and nightlife.

Estimates from average local prices and live hotel rates; exchange rates as of 2026-10-06. Your trip can cost more or less.
