Quick facts: Five stone stelae on turtle backs record the names of 1,307 scholars who passed the royal exams here between 1442 and 1779. The site's five courtyards stretch over 54,000 square meters, each transitioning from quiet gardens to grand ceremonial halls.
Highlights: Each doctoral stele sits atop a stone turtle, but look closely at those turtles. Their poses subtly shift from one stele to the next, reflecting changing artistic styles across 300 years of Vietnamese dynastic rule.

- Rub your hand over the turtles' heads for good luck, but go early before the bronze patina gets polished too bright by thousands of hands.
- Skip the main gate selfie crush and head straight to the third courtyard where the 82 stelae sit in neat shaded rows.
