Getting around

For days 1 to 3, rent a car from Reykjavík; the Golden Circle loop, the South Coast to Vík, and on to Jökulsárlón involve roughly 2 to 4.5 hour drives each way on Route 1, and a vehicle gives the flexibility you need at remote sites. Around Reykjavík, walking is best within the old centre, while Strætó buses connect museums, Perlan, and the Whales of Iceland, though the 41 and 15 lines work for most stops. Use the Hreyfill taxi app for late nights; fares run about 2.1 ISK per kilometer. For days 5 and 6, keep the rental car to reach Snæfellsnes and the underground lava tube, each about 2 hours from the capital.
