Korte feiten: Het werd opgericht om een uniek complex van meren, bossen en een middeleeuws kasteel op een eiland te beschermen. Het beslaat 8.200 hectare en herbergt meer dan 200 vogelsoorten, terwijl de meren bijna 22% van de totale oppervlakte beslaan.
Hoogtepunten: Het kasteel van Trakai, gebouwd op een klein eiland midden in het Galvėmeer, is het enige kasteel op een eiland in heel Oost-Europa. Stel je een stenen fort voor met dieprode gotische details dat oprijst uit het blauwgroene water, vooral betoverend wanneer het avondlicht het goudkleurig kleurt.

- Rent a kayak or rowboat to see the castle from the lake - the view from the water is unmatched.
- Visit the Karaite kiosk in the center of Trakai for authentic kibinai (minced meat in dough) before you leave.
- The inside of the castle has long queues at noon - arrive right after opening or after 4:00 PM for peace and quiet.
- Wear shoes with good grip if you plan to climb the towers - the stairs are narrow and made of wrought wood.
