Rychlá fakta: Přes 200 jeskynních kostelů a klášterů je vytesáno přímo do měkkého vulkanického tufu napříč údolím. Fresky z 10. století uvnitř Temného kostela přežily tak živě, protože místnost neměla téměř žádná okna, která by vpouštěla světlo.
Zajímavosti: Uvnitř Karanlık Kilise neboli Temného kostela vypadají modře laděné fresky Kristova života tak svěže jako v den, kdy byly namalovány, a to díky staletím téměř úplné tmy. Najednou je povoleno pouze 30 návštěvníků, takže máte klidný a intimní pohled na výjevy, které mniši malovali před více než 900 lety.
