Rychlá fakta: Více než 30 skalních kostelů a kaplí se shlukuje v tomto klášterním komplexu vytesaném do měkkého vulkanického tufu. Několik kaplí si zachovalo živé byzantské fresky z 11. století, přičemž Temný kostel uchoval své malby díky staletím téměř úplné tmy.
Zajímavosti: Temný kostel získal své jméno proto, že nemá téměř žádná okna, a právě toto věčné šero je důvodem, proč se jeho biblické fresky z 11. století dochovaly v tak nedotčeném stavu. Jediný paprsek přirozeného světla dopadá na kopulovou malbu Krista Pantokratora v tom správném úhlu, díky čemuž zlaté svatozáře jakoby září proti tmavě modrému pozadí.

- Pay the separate entry fee for the Dark Church, its frescoes are dramatically more vivid than any other chapel here.
- Visit the Apple Church and Snake Church early in your walk before crowds cluster in the narrow corridors between chapels.
- Wear comfortable shoes with good grip, the carved stone pathways and steep stair climbs between chapels can be slippery.
- Photography inside the chapels is often restricted, but you can capture excellent exterior shots of the rock-cut facades from the upper pathway.
