Schnelle Fakten: Es sind 998 in den blauen Sandstein der Blue Mountains gemeißelte Stufen, die 300 Meter hinab ins Tal führen. Die Treppe wurde in den 1930er Jahren von Arbeitern der Depressionszeit gebaut, die nur Spitzhacken und Schaufeln benutzten.
Highlights: Auf halbem Abstieg bildet ein saisonaler Wasserfall natürliche Pools, in denen man das kalte Wasser durch die Finger rinnen spüren kann, während es zwischen den Sandsteinwänden hallt. Während der Wanderung kreuzt man alte handgemalte Schilder, die Stellen markieren, an denen Kohlebergleute des 19. Jahrhunderts die Hänge erkundeten.

- Wear sneakers with good grip: the steps are uneven and can get slippery with moisture.
- Climb back via the Scenic Railway if you get too tired, but it costs AUD 39 per person.
- Start early (before 9 am) to find the staircase nearly empty with dramatic fog in the valley.
- Bring a flashlight or use your phone's: some deeper sections of the gorge are very dark even during the day.
