Schnelle Fakten: Die katholische Kathedrale St. Ludwig in Plovdiv ist die größte katholische Kirche Bulgariens und die zweitgrößte auf der gesamten Balkanhalbinsel. Ihre Geschichte reicht bis in die 40er Jahre des 19. Jahrhunderts zurück, als sie von französischen katholischen Missionaren erbaut wurde, und ihr Glockenturm ist ganze 44 Meter hoch.

Highlights: Im Inneren überrascht ein atemberaubender Barockaltar aus weißem Marmor, der direkt aus Italien gebracht wurde. Unter der Kathedrale liegt eine geheime Krypta mit einer Sammlung antiker Reliefs und Fresken, die bei der Renovierung im Jahr 2002 entdeckt wurden.

Insidertipps

• Go to the side chapel where the original cathedral plans are kept. Very few people know about this treasure.
• Take photos on the staircase in front of the main entrance, where the best view of the entire facade is.
• Enter the crypt through the side door to the left of the altar. The church guide will gladly show you the way if you ask politely.
• Avoid visiting during religious holidays, when the church is overflowing with locals and there is hardly any room to look around.
