Schnelle Fakten: Die Felsformationen bestehen aus Salz und Lehm, die Wind und Wasser über Millionen von Jahren geformt haben, und die Luftfeuchtigkeit liegt hier manchmal unter fünf Prozent. Die Salz- und Lehmschicht erstreckt sich wie ein langes Rückgrat durch die Wüste, während die Düne am Rand des Tals Sandboardfahrer aus ganz Südamerika anzieht.

Highlights: Am Grund des Tals knirschen die Salzkristalle unter den Füßen wie trockener Schnee, während die Nachmittagssonne die Lehmformationen in Rosa, Orange und Tiefrot glühen lässt. Wenn die Hitze steigt, kann die Luftspiegelung eine Fata Morgana erzeugen, die den gesamten Talboden wie eine Wasserfläche glänzen lässt, obwohl Regen hier in den meisten Jahren eine Seltenheit ist.

• Bring plenty of water and sun protection, shade is almost completely absent and the midday sun is merciless.
• The best photo is taken from the viewpoint at the edge in the late afternoon light, where you get both the sand dune and the entire valley floor in the picture.
• Sandboard rental is available at the entrance, but find the softest side of the dune and wax the board properly for the best glide.
• Skip the middle of the day when the heat and crowds are at their worst, and come instead around 4-5 PM for a calmer atmosphere.
