Schnelle Fakten: Die Lagune von Berbera dient als wichtiger Rastplatz für Zugvögel auf der ostafrikanischen Zugroute, jährlich ruhen hier Zehntausende Vögel. Der Salzgehalt des Wassers in der Lagune ist fast doppelt so hoch wie im offenen Ozean, was ein einzigartiges Ökosystem mit rosafarbenen salzliebenden Mikroorganismen schafft.
Highlights: Bei völliger Windstille verwandelt sich die Oberfläche der Lagune in einen perfekten Spiegel, der den Himmel so klar reflektiert, dass die Grenze zwischen Wasser und Luft verschwindet. Bei Sonnenuntergang nimmt das Wasser durch winzige halophile Bakterien, die im Flachwasser Salz oxidieren, einen intensiven rosaroten bis violetten Farbton an.

- Wear flip-flops or water shoes. The bottom is covered in sharp shells, and you won't get far barefoot.
- The best photos are taken from the southern shore of the lagoon, where the sky reflection is most complete due to less ripple.
- Come on a weekday. On weekends, local families come here, and the birds stay farther from the shore.
- Bring a polarizing filter for your camera. It removes glare from the salt water and makes the pink hue more vivid.
