Schnelle Fakten: Mehr als 30 in den Fels gehauene Kirchen und Kapellen drängen sich in diesem Klosterkomplex, der in weichen vulkanischen Tuffstein gemeißelt wurde. Mehrere Kapellen bewahren lebendige byzantinische Fresken aus dem 11. Jahrhundert, wobei die Dunkle Kirche ihre Gemälde durch jahrhundertelange fast vollständige Dunkelheit erhalten hat.
Highlights: Die Dunkle Kirche verdankt ihren Namen der Tatsache, dass sie fast keine Fenster hat, und genau diese ewige Düsternis ist der Grund, warum ihre biblischen Fresken aus dem 11. Jahrhundert in einem so makellosen Zustand überdauert haben. Ein einzelner Lichtstrahl fällt im richtigen Winkel auf das Kuppelgemälde von Christus Pantokrator und lässt die goldenen Heiligenscheine vor dem tiefblauen Hintergrund zu leuchten scheinen.

- Pay the separate entry fee for the Dark Church, its frescoes are dramatically more vivid than any other chapel here.
- Visit the Apple Church and Snake Church early in your walk before crowds cluster in the narrow corridors between chapels.
- Wear comfortable shoes with good grip, the carved stone pathways and steep stair climbs between chapels can be slippery.
- Photography inside the chapels is often restricted, but you can capture excellent exterior shots of the rock-cut facades from the upper pathway.
