About
Quick facts: The Red Mosque is one of only two surviving mosques from the medieval-era fortress quarter of Berat, located within the hilltop castle complex. Its minaret collapsed during the communist era, but the surviving brickwork reveals the distinctive red tone that gives it its name.
Highlights: Up close you can spot the original Ottoman-era brickwork patterns and fragments of the prayer hall walls still clinging to the hilltop, set against panoramic valley views. The structure's bare, roofless state lets you trace the layout of the old prayer hall and imagine the congregation that disappeared after the 1967 ban on religious practice in Albania.
Insider tips
- Wear sturdy shoes because the walk up to the castle quarter involves steep, uneven cobblestones.
- The best photo angle captures the red brick against the green valley from the western side of the ruins.
- Pair your visit with the nearby Onufri Museum inside the castle to round out the historical context.
- Come on a weekday to avoid the larger tour groups that arrive on weekends.
