Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is a busy, generally safe tourist city with a strong foreigner-friendly feel and modest violent crime. Watch most for souvenir pricing near the beach, unofficial taxi touts at arrival points, and pickpocketing in crowded promenades. Stick to official ranks, licensed drivers, and reasonable walking-away power on prices.

How it works: Thieves work crowds on Las Canteras beach promenade, busy markets and bus stops, distracting or brushing victims while lifting wallets and phones. Distraction can involve someone bumping you or asking a question.
How to avoid it: Keep bags zipped and in front, phones out of back pockets, and avoid large cash. Stay alert in dense crowds near the beach.
How it works: Unlicensed drivers approach tourists outside the terminal offering cheaper or immediate rides, then overcharge or take long routes. Some quote a fixed fare far above the meter for the same journey.
How to avoid it: Use only the official taxi rank directly outside arrivals and insist the meter runs. Refuse anyone who quotes a flat inflated price.
How it works: Some tourist-facing restaurants add bread, cover or a terrace fee to the bill without being asked, especially along the beach. These charges are not standard and can inflate the total noticeably.
How to avoid it: Check the menu for any board or service note, refuse unrequested bread, and review the bill line by line before paying.
How it works: Exchange offices in tourist zones advertise no commission but give weak rates or add hidden fees, so you net far less than the bank mid-market rate. Street booths typically cost more than a card payment.
How to avoid it: Pay by card or withdraw a modest amount from a bank-attached ATM. Decline dynamic currency conversion at the machine or terminal.
How it works: Souvenir stalls, beach gear rentals and impromptu services near the sand quote tourist-inflated prices with room to bargain. Items and services vary widely in quality for what is charged.
How to avoid it: Compare a couple of stalls, agree the full price before renting or buying, and walk away if the quote feels unfair.
Skip street sellers: book official tickets and tours with free cancellation.
Gran Canaria Airport (LPA)
Fair taxi price (official, daytime): €30 - €40. Take the official taxi rank outside arrivals. Metered daytime fares to the city centre run about 30 to 40 euro. Refuse drivers who quote a fixed inflated price or skip the meter.
Best alternative: Airport bus (Guaguas line 60) to the city centre, arriving near San Telmo park (€3.50, about 30 min)
Tipping: Not mandatory but appreciated. Leave small change at cafes and restaurants, around 5 to 10 percent for exceptional service. Taxis and tours do not expect a tip.
Cover and service charges: Cover or service charges are not standard in Las Palmas. Check the menu for any board- or terrace-fee added to the bill, and ask if the displayed price includes service before paying. Some tourist-heavy spots add bread or cover without asking.
Always choose to be charged in euros and decline dynamic currency conversion, which gives poor rates. Prefer ATMs attached to banks rather than independent street machines that charge high fees. Pay by card where possible to avoid cash exchange.
