About
Quick facts: This building is a former Moorish-style mansion used by rulers during the French colonial era. It contains over 10,000 objects reflecting Algeria's history from prehistory to the 20th century.
Highlights: The most exciting thing is the treasure room from the 16th century era of Algerian pirates, where real pirate weapons and treasures are kept. The museum's large oval hall, which was once a ballroom, has preserved its grand paintings and gilded plaster ceilings.
Insider tips
- Bring a camera, but check on site whether a photography permit is needed, as some halls have photography restrictions.
- Be sure to see the ethnography hall on the second floor, where Berber clothing and jewelry are exhibited.
- Have some cash on hand, because the museum ticket office may not accept credit cards.
- Combine the visit with the nearby Jardin d'Essai botanical garden, which is just a short walk away.
