About

Quick facts: This is one of the few Catholic churches in North Africa, built as if dedicated to the Mother of God placed on a throne, with a view directly over the Mediterranean. The rounded dome of the choir is visible from far out at sea, and inside the church there is a statue of Mary hanging 10 meters below the ceiling.

Highlights: On the church's main altar there is a black statue of Mary, symbolizing the unity of African peoples and nicknamed "Our Lady of Africa" among pilgrims. Standing on the terrace in front of the church, a view opens over the entire Bay of Algiers, and locals say that on clear days even Cape Matifou can be seen 20 kilometers away.

Insider tips

  • Bring modest clothing, as this is an active place of worship and covering shoulders and knees is good practice here
  • The best photo spot is the terrace behind the church, which offers a panoramic view over the bay, rather than the usual selfie spot in front of the main entrance
  • Combine your visit with the old Bologhine neighborhood below, with its colorful fishing village streets and a fresh fish market
  • Services are held in French and Arabic, so check the website for mass times if you want to see the church in full glory
