Best time to visit

Early morning between 9-11 a.m. is best because the sun lights up the facade and there are fewer people. The interior, which offers shade from the midday heat, is also better experienced in cooler weather.

Budget tips

Admission is free, but it is customary for many visitors to leave a small donation. If you plan to visit other Casbah attractions, consider a local guide, who can often offer combined tours at better prices.

About

Quick facts: The Ketchaoua Mosque has been both a mosque and a cathedral at different times: during the colonial period it was converted into the Cathedral of Saint Philip. The building was constructed during the Ottoman period, and its 23-meter minaret looks down over the narrow streets of the Casbah.

Highlights: The most fascinating detail is the building's dual history: in 1962, after Algeria's independence, it was converted back into a mosque in a single day after having stood as a cathedral for 115 years. Inside you will find both Islamic architecture and remaining Christian elements, such as a carved stone bishop's throne, which is rare and symbolizes the intertwining of two religions within one perimeter.

Insider tips

  • Dress modestly; covering shoulders and knees is important to many locals and contributes to a respectful visit.
  • Photograph the minaret from below during the evening sun, when its shadow falls in an arc across the courtyard walls.
  • During prayer times (especially Friday midday), entry is restricted for visitors, so plan your visit for the morning instead.
  • Combine your visit with nearby Casbah attractions to get a better overview of the district's history.
