Evening, especially during summer, when the air cools down and the street fills with life. The weekend from Wednesday to Saturday is the liveliest, when the street market operates and cafes stay open until late.

Budget tips

Entry is free, but cafe prices are high, so try food from street stalls for half the price. Local shops offer good bargains, especially on Wednesday and Friday when the open market is active.

About

Quick facts: Around 450 shops and cafes stretch along the 1.6-kilometer street, making it the commercial heart of Tel Aviv. Its northern part was designed as a four-lane road with a central island, an urban planning solution rare for the time it was built.

Highlights: At the head of the street stands a famous water and light fountain, known as the "Cream and Ice Cream" fountain, which is the only fountain in the world that turns on its lights every evening at 8:00 PM with a choreographed show synchronized to music. During the summer, local residents bring chairs and sit around it for hours, turning it into an improvised social stage.

Insider tips

  • Wear comfortable shoes because you will walk a lot and the sidewalks are wide but crowded with people
  • The best photo is taken from the second-floor cafe at the corner of the street with King George Street, especially at sunset
  • Avoid Monday morning when many shops are closed for their weekly day off
  • Take some time to explore the side alleys where you will find art galleries and small boutiques that are not found on tourist maps
