Fort Jesus
Best time to visit
The best time is between 08:00-10:00; the cool air makes exploring easier and the crowds have not formed yet. Around sunset, the view from the bastions overlooking the sea offers the most beautiful frame of the day.
Budget tips
Adult foreign visitor entry is approximately 15 USD, significantly cheaper for students and Kenyan citizens. The Kenya Museums membership card provides annual entry rights, and buying a combined ticket with other museums in the region also saves money.

About
Quick facts: This structure, whose walls are built of coral rock and lime mortar, absorbs incoming cannonballs rather than shattering them; thanks to this feature it has stood for centuries. Its star-shaped bastions overlooking the Indian Ocean have witnessed the changing shadow of the Portuguese, Omani and British flags over four centuries.
Highlights: When you climb the stone stairs to the bastions, the sailing ships and signatures carved into the wall by sailors and captives who stood watch here 400 years ago can still be read. Beneath the corridors swept by the salty wind, while listening to the sound of water rising from the defense wells, you will feel as if you are in a completely different century.
Insider tips
- Go early in the morning or in the afternoon; the midday sun heats the stone walls like an oven.
- Non-slip shoes and a hat are essential, the courtyard stones have become mirror-slippery from centuries of wear.
- Go up to the bastions facing the sea at sunset, the most impressive photo opportunity occurs when the shadows of the cannons fall on the wall.
- Be sure to visit the underground prison cells and ammunition depots, these sections hold the most striking corner of the story.
