For a summit attempt, the dry seasons of January-February and July-September are most suitable; during these periods the sky is clear, the trails are solid, and glacier conditions are more predictable.
Budget tips
The daily park entrance fee is approximately 70 dollars per adult, with a lower rate for students. You can significantly reduce the total cost by bringing your own camping equipment, staying at the cheap bandas inside the park, and climbing independently instead of taking guided tours.

Quick facts: This extinct volcano, 17 kilometers in diameter, is Africa's second highest point with its 5,199-meter Batian peak. Carrying glaciers just above the equator defies belief; between the 13 separate peaks on its slopes stretch alpine meadows covered with giant rosette plants.
Highlights: The Kikuyu people call this mountain 'Kirinyaga,' meaning 'mountain of light,' and consider its peak the throne of the god Ngai. At dawn the mountain's shadow falls across the savanna for 160 kilometers, and the glaciers turning from orange to pink put on an extraordinary play of light together with the equatorial snowscape.
Insider tips
- At dawn, watch the red light of Batian from the Met Station on the Naro Moru slope, and do not miss that shot as the mountain's shadow falls over the savanna.
- As you approach the summit, the temperature drops below zero, so dress in layers and be sure to bring waterproof boots.
- Do not limit yourself to the popular Sirimon route only; the Gorges Valley and the glacial lakes at the top on the Chogoria route are far more impressive.
- Do not underestimate altitude sickness; sleep at least two nights around 3,000 meters before attempting the summit.
